In this paper the formulations and the characteristics of friction and wear of friction material are investigated, for which carbon fibers are used as reinforcement and boron-modified phenolic resin are used as matrix.The material’s friction and wear characteristics are influenced by the surface oxidation methods of gas phase, liquid phase and gas-liquid combined phase for treating carbon fibers.It is found through three experimental conditions of (500r/min、0.98MPa),(1000r/min、0.98MPa) and (500r/min、1.96MPa) that carbon fibers with surface oxidation treatment would become coarse and increase the binding strength of the carbon fiber with a resin, resulting in making the material stable coefficient of friction and low wear at the condition of high temperature and high speed.On this basis, the optimized surface treatment method is put forward for carbon fibers.It is indicated by the experiments by comparing with boron-modified phenolic resin and straight phenolic resin that the stable friction coefficient and low wear can be achieved for the material using both carbon fibers and boron-modified phenolic resin at the condition of high temperature and high speed, and damping phenomenon does not take place although at the condition of1500r/min,0.98MPa.It is also found through the experiments with different contents of carbon fibers that there exist a optimized amount of carbon fibers and excess carbon fibers in the friction material will make the material’s performance get down.It is concluded that the friction material with carbon fibers of6%weight which undergo at the temperature of450℃gas phase treatment5hours with the furnace cooling carbon fiber and boron-modified phenolic resin of9%weight possesses a good friction and wear characteristics even if copper material is not used.It is shown that friction material with carbon fibers has excellent performance of anti-speed damping and friction material with copper fibers has better performance of anti-pressure damping.The friction material with both carbon fibers and copper fibers will embody good performance at the condition of high temperature, high speed and high pressure.
