With the development of China’s market economy, the domestic and international markets in an increasingly competitive, new products update faster, their shapes become more complex, and higher precision is required, so the traditional tools have been unable to meet production requirements, the importance of flexible manufacturing is more and more obvious, then it causes the increasing demand for CNC machine tools.There are two ways for enterprises to obtain CNC production capacity:purchase of new equipment or upgrading old equipment. To purchase new CNC equipment needs larger funds, while under the condition of shortage of funds for technological renovation, through the transformation of old equipment to get the CNC Processing capacity is an effective way. So the transformation of CNC machine tools has become an important research topic.This paper summarized the common programs and features of the transformation as well as the advantages of domestic and international trends. It also analyzed the structure of the existing SSCK20A CNC lathe, PLC control and hydraulic system. The improvement programs were put forward and got results. The results are shown as follow:1. Through the transformation of screw nuts, cabinets and nozzles of SSCK20A CNC lathe, the production efficiency of the whole machine tool has been improved, which increases the processing and cooling efficiency, as well as extends tool’s life and reduces processing costs.2. According to SSCK20A CNC Lathe features, the Mitsubishi FX2N PLC was selected as a controller, a four station turret control as an example, then the control circuit, ladder, external wiring and other transformation design were shown and the main Components were listed in this paper.3. Through the transformation of hydraulic system of SSCK20A CNC lathe, the accuracy of hydraulic chuck has been greatly improved, the automation level has also been strengthened to improve productivity and reduce labor intensity:the improvements design of hydraulic tailstock system has improved the rapid response capability of the tail Block.Although this transformation of SSCK20A CNC lathe has achieved some results, but it still can not fully meet the application requirements, so further study and modification are needed.The results from this paper will provide practical basis for the transformation of SSCK20A CNC lathes. It also shows the importance to extend the life of CNC machine tools, to update the equipment and technology and to improve their performance.
