Molasses, whose essential components are the sucrose, the glucose and the fructose, isthe by-product of the sugar industry and has been used in various ways. Molasses could bedirectly applied in feedstock and paper industry but its added value is rather low; molassesused in fermentation industry to produce ethanol, yeast and amino acid would have higheradded values, but the discharge of the leftovers could pollute the soil and the source of waterand the following environment improvement is rather uneconomical. Therefore, it is quitenecessary to develop new applications to maximize its potential value. In this paper, threekinds of materials including the modified molasses cement grinding AIDS, slow-release ureaand edible packing material were prepared by chemically modifying the molasses. Thestructures and properties of these three products were carefully characterized and tested. The preparation and functional test of the low-release urea: the molasses starch ester wassynthesized using molasses and starch as raw materials and sulfuric acid as the catalyst.Taking the slow release property of the slow release urea as the index, the influence of themass ratio of the molasses and starch, catalyst consumption, reaction time and reactiontemperature on the esterification was investigated by the orthogonal experiment. At the sametime, the optimum esterification scheme was thus determined. The IR analysis showed thatthe peak at1720cm-1is the characteristic absorption peak of C=O from the aldehyde group inthe oxidative molasses and the peak at1742cm-1is that of C=O from the ester group in themolasses starch ester. The release behavior of urea encapsulated in water and soil were bothstudied. It took24hours for the slow release urea(Ⅰ) to release93%in the water. Comparedwith the pure urea which would totally dissolve in the water in five seconds, the slow releaseproperty of the ester is much higher. It took76hours for the slow release urea(Ⅰ) to releasecompletely in the soil(humidity30%). At the same time, we found that increasing soilhumidity would speed up the release rate. In order to further improve its slow release property,slow-release encapsulated urea(Ⅱ) was prepared by hydrophobically modifying slow releaseurea using the silane and stearic acid. The release behavior of urea(Ⅱ) encapsulated in waterand soil were then studied. The results showed that the release rate of the modified urea is20%after24hs. The slow release property of the ester is much higher. The preparation and performance test of cement grinding AIDS. Different types ofmodified cement grinding AIDS was prepared by changing the pH and temperatures. Theapplication results showed that the AIDS could remarkably enhanced the flexural strength(5.39.6Mp) and compressive strength(30.662.5Mp) of28d cement. By using1D and2DFTIR, the composition changes at different reaction conditions were analyzed. Thefunction mechanism of the modified molasses as cement grinding aids was also discussed. The preparation and functional test of the green packaging material: This material wasprepared using molasses and CMC as the raw material. The whole esterification wascatalyzed by sulfuric acid. Factors affecting esterification such as the mass ratio of molassesand CMC, mass ratio of CMC and water, reaction temperature and reaction time wereevaluated according to the orthogonal test, taking the film tensile strengthen as the index. Sothe best conditions for the esterification were identified. In the IR spectrogram of the newlysynthesized material, peaks at1738cm-1and1226cm-1indicating the formation of the estergroup. The film was further modified using glycerin as the plasticizer. The influence of thedrying temperature and poured modulus on the property of the film was studied. The slow release fertilizer is completely biodegradable and is in great accordance withthe idea of green environmental protection and low carbon economy. The three modifiedmolasses products would make molasses reused and the maximum use of the molassesresources. The application prospect of molasses is good.
