The rivers have been damaged due to the rapid development of industrialization andcity, and the image of city and urban residents’ daily life have been seriously affected bythe polluted rivers. Water is the fundamental element for the survival of humanity. Thehistory of humanity progress is close related to water, the relationship between river andhuman especially relevant, particularly in the construction of city ecological system andthe expansion of city public space. The river can bring people aesthetic feeling, toimprove the living environment, provide people with entertainment, but also has thefunction of flood drainage. Along with the urban residents environmental awarenessgradually increased, the environmental quality of the river city has been received moreand more attention. The comprehensive treatment of damaged river has become a hotresearch topic in the field of ecology and environmental management. In recent years, many river comprehensive renovation projects have been carried out in many cities. Theplanning and development of city waterfront is become a very important link in thecomprehensive treatment process of river. The ecological suitability assessment of aplanning area can provides scientific analysis and evaluation of land use and layout, andfind out the major factors that affecting the regional ecological environment quality, andproviding a guideline for the regional development and construction. Consequently, it isnecessary to evaluate the ecological suitability of the urban waterfront beforeimplementing a regional planning. Therefore, in this study, we takes Shanghai city Baoshan District Yunzao CreekRiver as an example, a two dimensional natural environment and social and economicevaluation index system was established based on the analysis of the coastal ecologicalenvironment problems and the field survey data of Yunzao Creek River. The ecological suitability of the both sides of the Yunzao Bang river in Baoshan District, Shanghai, wereassessed using AHP method and GIS technology. The results show that: the ecologicalsuitability zone covers about27.1%of the current total area, mainly distributed inYundongduan and the border of Baoshan and Jiading; the relatively suitable zone covers15.1%of the total area, mainly distributed in the small area of Yundongduan, which witha reasonable industrial layout, and the ecological suitability is better; the unsuitable zonecovers32%of the total area, which occupies most area of the Yunzhongduan. theecological environment and landscape is influenced by a large number of small pollutedenterprises. Thus, in order to improve the suitability of this zone, the properties anddevelopment of the land use should be adjusted, the vegetation of the river bank shouldbe remedied to improve the diversity and stability of the ecosystem; the most unsuitablearea covers25.8%of the total area, mainly distributed in the Wusong Industrial Zone andSongnan town.Furthermore, the bank utilization rates on the ecological suitability was furtherdiscussed. The quality of the river water will be significantly improved if the naturaldegradation property of the microbes in the substrate sludge and the two banks can befully utilized. In order to reduce the influence of human actives on the ecosystem of theriver bank, the stone-laying of some river bank can be substituted by ecological brickmaterial. Finally, the planning of “three river combination” for the the Yunzaobang River, the Huangpu River and the Yangtse River was proposed, which give scientific support tothe environmental treatment of the Yunzaobang in Shanghai.
