The mold is an important part of the continuous casting machine,It’s the last part ofcontrolling the liquid steel cleanliness and plays an important role on the quality of billet.The transport phenomena in the continuous casting mold include flow, heat transfer,solidification, solute redistribution, and so on.these phenomenas are interrelated.For the thin slab casting and rolling process, the casting speed is much faster thanthe average slab caster, and the narrow space in thin slab mold make it much difficult tocontrol the liquid level, deteriorated the environment of the heat transfer and chemicalresidue, and increased the possibility of the casting powder into the liquid steel, thosefactor will affect the quality of the slab. In order to obtain maximum efficiency under thepremise of ensuring the quality of the slab, studying solidification heat transfer and steelflow behavior of thin slab mold is necessary.Currently, there are lots simulation on flow field and heat transfer of thin slab moldHowever, due to the two-phase flow is difficult to deal with, most simulation didn’tconsider the solidified shell, and treated the free surface as a wall or symmetry, so wecann’t know the case of the liquid level, affected the accuracy of simulation. This paperwill include the simulation of the solidified shell in thin-slab mold and trace the levelfluctuation at the same time by using the VOF model.In this paper, the practical molten steel data in CSP (compact Strip Production) thinslab caster mold of a certain steel mill will be used as the research object, large amountsof previous work will be referenced,at first,the paper established a three-dimensionalmodel of molten steel flow and solidification heat transfer in thin-slab mold on AnsysWorkbench platform, used the Fluent module to calculate the values of different castingspeeds and different depth of nozzle and got the results of the distribution pattern of theflow field, billet shell as well as the level fluctuation in CSP thin slab caster mold,provided a reliable theoretical guidance for the actual production.
