2-propyl-heptanol (decanol,2-PH) is an important organic chemical raw material,mainly used in the production of plasticizers. Bis(2-propylheptyl) phthalate, which isproduced from2-PH, because of its excellent physical properties, safety, andeconomical, has been widely applied. Now,2-PH is gradually replacing the market ofmainstream plasticizer alcohols—2-ethylhexanol.The main synthesis method of2-PH is butylene carbonylation; the processmainly includes hydroformylation, aldol condensation and hydrogenation. Nowadays,the internal researches are focused on new catalysts, while most of these catalystshaven’t industrialized. At the same time, few researches on2-PH have assist onindustry production. This work, in the view of practical, makes research on theprocess of aldol condensation and hydrogenation.In this paper, using valeraldehyde, which is synthesized and refined in lab, asraw material, NaOH solution as catalyst, the liquid-liquid two phase aldolcondensation reaction was investigated experimentally. The factors of reaction time,temperature, NaOH concentration and the proportion of valeraldehyde and catalyst(O/A) were studied. The experiment results show that: aldol reaction catalyzed byNaOH solution is a fast exothermic reaction, when NaOH solution concentration is12%wt, O/A is2:11:2, reaction temperature is100110℃, reaction time longerthan30min, valeraldehyde conversion greater than99%, and the selective of2-propyl-2-hepenal about95%.In adiabatic fixed-bed hydrogenation reactor, liquid phase hydrogenation of2-propyl-2-heptenal was studied on Ni-based catalyst (HTC Ni500RP) which wassupplied by Johnson Matthey Company. The effects of operating parameters (such asinlet temperature, LHSV, reaction pressure, V(H2):V(oil) and raw materialcompositions) on hydrogenation reaction are studied in detail. The test result showedthat under the reaction condition of100℃of inlet temperature,4.0MPa, LHSV of0.42g·(gcat·h)-1, V(H2)∶V(oil) of600, hydrogenation reaction conversion is nearly100%and the complete hydrogenation product2-propyl-2-heptanol selectivity is up to97%. On the base of experiment, we advance an industry process of2-PH production.The process includes four units: aldol condensation,2-propyl-2-hepenal refine,hydrogenation and2-PH refine.
