Bamboo shoot shell is the waste of bamboo shoot processing, in order to realize highquality use of it, this work prepared bamboo shoot shell (BSS)/high-density polyethylene(HDPE) composites (BSSP) mainly with BSS and HDPE. The mechanical, crystallizationand degradation properties of BSSP were characterized with Mechanical properties test,Fourier Transform Infrared (FT-IR), Electronic scanning electron microscopy (SEM),X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and Soil burieddegradation test, the following results were obtained.(1) After treated by silane coupling agent KH-570, the surface polarity andhydrophilic of BSS decreased, and the interface compatibility between BSS and HDPE canbe improved. The mechanical properties of BSSP improved gradually with increasingdosage of KH-570. When the dosage of KH-570is2phr, the tensile strength, impactstrength and flexural strength of BSSP reached to the highest value (31.3MPa,19.8kJ/m2,38.3MPa respectively). After that, all the mechanical properties of BSSP decreased.(2) With increasing content of BSS the tensile strength and impact strength of BSSPdecreased gradually, while the flexural strength increased in earlier stage and decreasedlatter. It is also found that the impact strength of BSSP decreased obviously when thedosage of BSS included in the range of0~30phr. When the dosage of BSS is40phr, theflexural strength of BSSP reached to the highest value.(3) The addition of BSS can accelerate the overall non-isothermal crystallizationprocess of HDPE and refine the crystallite, but do not change the nucleation mechanismand dimension of spherulite growth of HDPE matrix. When the relative degree X(t) ofcrystallinity is approximately71.6%or more, Jeziorny method is invalid to describe thenon-isothermal crystallization process, while Liu method are successful to describe thewhole non-isothermal crystallization process of HDPE and BSSP. The crystallization ratefor HDPE and BSSP increases with the increasing cooling rate, but the crystallization rateof BSSP is quicker than that of HDPE at a given cooling rate. Moreover, the addition ofBSS decreases the crystallization activation energy Eccalculated by Kissinger equation.(4) The weight loss of BSSP is relatively large early in the degradation experiment,after a period of time it tends to be slow. The percentage of weight loss of BSSP is higherthan HDPE. With increasing BSS content, the durability of fungi deterioration and degradation properties of BSSP increased. In addition, KH-570can inhibit fungidegradation composite materials to some extent.
