In the society and the scientific community, there has been an increasing interest onstudy of Pharmaceutical and Personal Care Products (PPCPs) in the environment in recentyears.Antibiotics play an important role in the prevention and cure of human and livestockbacterial diseases. But after human and livestock taking the antibiotics, antibiotic can notmetabolize completely in their bodies, a part of them are excreted into environment as theiroriginal form. Antibiotic residues in the environment cause the emergence of bacterialresistance, affect the microecological balance and do harm to living creatures. This paper tooktwo sewage treatment plants in a city in the northeast as the research object, analysed anddetected several typical sulfonamide antibiotics in the sewage plants, established andoptimized the method of pre-treatment and LC-MS/MS of antibiotics in sewage and sludge.By analysing the antibiotic concentration of each technical process, the paper researched theresidues status and removal efficiency of antibiotics in the sewage treatment plant. Theresearch result had certain significance to understand the antibiotics residue levels and itseffect to the environment. In this paper, the HPLC-MS/MS method of analysing sulfonamide antibiotics inenvironment was established and optimized. The pre-treatment methods of extracting thesulfonamides antibiotics from the sewage by solid phase extraction(SPE), as well as from thesludge by ultrasonic extraction combined with concussion extraction were developed.Astandard curve method was adopted to quantify sulfonamide antibiotics, the limit of detectionof the5kinds of sulfonamide antibiotics in the waste water sample was in the range of5~14ng/L,while it was14~43ng/g(dw)in the sludge. In the paper, the water samLes of each technical process and the residues status of the5sulfonamide antibiotics in the two sewage treatment plants at a city in the northeast wereanalysed. The total influent concentration of sulfonamide antibiotics reached1175~1720ng/L,sulfamethoxazole was detected with the highest concentration, whose influent concentrationreached576~697ng/L. The antibiotics level of the Sewage treatment plant at a city in thenortheast was in a moderate pollution level in China, but higher than Uropean and Americanarea. The treatment efficiency of sulfonamide antibiotics of A Sewage treatment plant withA/O treatment process was lower than the B Sewage treatment plant, whose treatment process is BAF. The concentration and removal efficiency of sulfonamide antibiotics in the sewagepresented some seasonal change trends. For both of the sewage treatment plants, the influentconcentration in autumn was higher than in summer, while the removal efficiency in autumnwas lower than in summer. The B Sewage treatment plant was less affected by the seasonalchanges.
