Activated carbon is an excellent adsorbent due to its special pore structure and surface functional groups, which has extensively used in industry such as environmental protection, chemical industry, food processing, pharmaceutical processing, and military chemistry etc. The leaf-oriented tree model for E. ulmoides (LOE) branches is comprehensive development of by-product of E. ulmoides processing. The LOE branches have compact structure and reatness of quantity, but its use of low level. It is significant to exploit the application of LOE branches, and open up a new way for utilization of E. ulmoides as biomass resourcesThe studies of sorbent were carried out on the preparation of activated carbon from LOE branches with chemical absent including ZnCl2, H3PO4as activator. By single-factor test and orthogonal test, the activated agent of different kinds and its ratio, the activate temperature、 the activate time, adsorption properties of activated carbon have been investigated. Base on these, the technologic methods and conditions of controlling structure and properties of activated carbon had been established. The morphology of activated carbon is observed by scan electric microscope. FT-IR diffraction analyzer analyzes the structure of microcrystal line in activated carbon. The processing optimum conditions on preparation for activated carbon from LOE branches with ZnCl2chemical activation method were obtained, which was the ZnCl2concentration of35%, the material-to-solution ratio of4:1, dip time of15h, activation temperature of600℃and activation time of180min. Under the optimal condition, the yield of the AC was32.5%, with iodine absorption of1210.8mg/g and methylene blue absorption of216.5mg/g. There were great deals of big-and-small pores in the activated carbon with ZnCl2as activator through electron-microscope observing. The result showed that the ZnCl2method to prepare activated carbon had better choiceness adsorbing capacity.Using H3PO4as activator soaking and carbonization-activation to LOE branches to prepare activated carbon as sorbent, the optimum technique parameter was H3PO4concentration of40%, the material-to-solution ratio of4:1, dip time of15h, the activated temperature of500℃and time of30min. The result showed that the decolorant capacity for methylene blue was149.56mg/g; the iodine value and the yield of the product were1028.94mg/g and65.4%respectively.The two methods of preparation of activated carbon, which met the requirement of Chinese first grade standard of GB/T13803.2-1999(iodine absorption:1000mg/g and methylene blue absorption:90mg/g).
