Soybean oil is a biomass, and it has many favourable characteristics suchas non-toxic, green, environmental-friendly, renewable, good stability andlow volatile, etc. In this work, soybean oil, soybean oil prepolymer andhydrogenated soybean oil have bean added to Nitrile-Butadiene Rubber(NBR)and Ethylene-Propylene-Diene Monomer(EPDM) as plasticizers, in order toresearch their plasticizing effect and mechanism. In this work, we have studied the effect of soybean oil and its derivativesby mooney viscosity, capillary rheometer, rubber process analyzer (RPA),and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). Rubber plasticized by soybeanoil and its derivatives compared with traditional plasticizers, has lowermooney viscosity, lower apparent viscosity and better processing performancetechnology. Secondly, we have studied the mechanism by Soxhlet extractionexperiments, Fourier transform infrared (FTIR), swelling experiments, gelpermeation chromatography (GPC). We found that soybean oil and itsderivatives were reactive plasticizers. In addition, we have studied othercomprehensive performances of rubbers plasticized by soybean oil and its derivatives by the test of mechanical properties, thermal gravimetric analysis(TGA), aging performance tests, dynamic thermodynamic analysis (DMTA).
