Improvement of the strength and toughness of plastics is to evaluate the success of modified plastic. Nylon6(PA6) plastics used widely in industry which retain the advantages of high mechanical strength and with the improvement of toughness with the addition of toughening agent.Core-shell particles are commonly used to toughen PA6. For the typical core-shell particles, the core phase is rubber which can increase the impact toughness and the shell has good compatibility with matrix to ensure a better dispersion. The core-shell particles used in the paper are acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) copolymers and maleic anhydride graft copolymers (ABS-g-MAH). The main contents are as follows:1Different methods were used to improve the compatibilization between the core-shell particles and PA6. The results showed ABS-g-MAH behaved much better compatibilization ability than SAM.2ABS core-shell particles were prepared with different initiator. The toughening capacity of different ABS for PA6was compared. The results showed ABS prepared with redox initiator showed much better toughening ability.3ABS-g-MAH and different elastomers were used to toughen PA6and the toughening capacity was compared. The results showed ABS-g-MAH and POE-g-MAH had much better toughening ability.4ABS and ASA core-shell particles, which have different core phase composition, were prepared and the toughening capacity was compared. The tests indicated that ABS had much better toughening ability.5Different amounts of tert-dodecyl mercaptan (TDDM) were used for the preparation of ABS with different graft degree and the toughening capacity was compared. The tests showed that by adjusting the TDDM content, it can get a perfect performance of PA6blends.6Core-shell modifiers of ABS-g-MAH with small particle size were synthesized by emulsion polymerization and were used to toughen PA6. By the mechanical properties test,60%rubber content of ABS-g-MAH modifier blended with PA6showed a significant toughening effect.
