Dynamic risers or cables, including flexible risers, dynamic cables or umbilicals, are key equipments with wide application in offshore oil and gas development as a kind of flexible structures subjecting to some dynamic environmental loads. The majority of dynamic risers and cables used in China are designed and fabricated by foreign companies, which restricts the security and economic development of domestic energy strategy. With the increasing concern of deep water oil exploration in China, it is particular urgent to form the capability in independent design, manufacture and installation. Generally, dynamic risers or cables are the weakest facilities in offshore application, for bearing severe dynamic loads such as environmental loads and floater motions. And the configuration of dynamic risers or cables, that is the global structure, determines the response of riser or cable under dynamic loads. So, it is necessary to promote some research on the configuration design and analysis according to the different design factors, including environment, development mode, and the specific properties of riser or cable. This dissertation is devoted to the research on riser or cable configuration of their design theories and methodologies, probes into the design factors, design parameters and their sensitivities, establishes a systematical design process and methods for configuration design.First of all, the selection of configuration based on conception and experience has been introduced. The method to select configuration according design factors, and the influences on response of configuration by key parameters are discussed in this dissertation. This work provides some references for configuration design, which would decrease the design circle and workload. Then, a computer program based on catenary theory is developed for configuration preliminary design. It is a much faster and more efficient way compared with the finite element method, even though has less accuracy. And this program is used in a practical project in Bohai sea. Moreover, a complete design process has been performed and demonstrated in this dissertation. Finally, parameter sensitivity analysis was adopted in a cable’s Lazy-S configuration research. The design parameters influencing on dynamic response of the riser or cable are studied, including location of mid water arch (MWA), net buoyancy of MWA, and the hanging angle. And this work provides a foundation and some necessary data for the configuration optimal design in future.
