Oilstone is an abrasive tool, which is mainly used for processing the mechanical partsand is compared to the “industrial tooth”. There is a great amount of its products inindustry. In China, whetstone manufacturers are spread all over the southeast coastal citiesrepresented by Dongyang, Zhejiang,with low hardness and easy to run out. However,β-SiC, as a new material, that can be used into the oilstone with higher hardness and betterdurability, is expected to become a substitute. As a result,this paper have been studiedthe preparation and physical properties of β-SiC oilstone, including the water absorption,porosity, bulk density and Rockwell hardness.In this paper, physical properties and preparation process of β-SiC oilstone havebeen studied in detail from two aspects of formulation and process, and obtained the bestformula and process under the experimental conditions. Namely:The best formula: when the content of β-SiC is100.0g, potassium feldspar is18.0g,fine naphthalene for6.0g, dextrin as3.0g and30.0g sugar water, B4C for2.5g, kaolin as19.0g.The optimum process: stale time is for1d, molding pressure for30MPa, sinteringtemperature of900℃, and vertical put.The physical properties of self-made whetstone are better than Dongyang whetstoneon the water absorption, porosity, bulk density and Rockwell hardness respectively.
