With the development of stereology and digital image processing technology, themetallographic analysis is much widely used in industrial work. Combiningstereology, digital image processing technology and quantitative metallography tocharacterize material properties has been an important direction recently. Traditionalsemi-quantitative metallographic analysis method needs plenty of manual work butyields a low accuracy, which hardly satisfied the further study of metal materialsmicrostructure. In this paper, considering the titanium alloy microstructure features, the author designed and implemented a metallographic analysis system to measurephase volume fraction and the thickness of widmanstatten in titanium alloymicrostructure. It’s based on the theory of stereology. In this research, the author introduced the stereological conception and basicprinciple firstly. Then some methods of computer digital image processing were usedto do some preprocessing, including denoising, binarization, dilation and erosion andso on. The author detailed an effective way for measuring metallographicwidmanstatten thickness specifically. According to the actual demand, the system wasdivided into three main functional modules: image binarization, phase volumefraction measurement and the thickness of widmanstatten measurement. This system is good for measuring the metallographic phase volume fraction andthickness of widmanstatten. It is easy to use and can satisfy users’ demand in accuracy. This system has achieved a better effect of metallographic analysis, so it has apotential market value.
