Study on the spectral characteristics of the sea is the prerequisite and basis formarine remote sensing applications, and color spectral characteristics of water is theprimary content of this study. Color spectrum is divided into apparent spectralcharacteristics and spectral characteristics of natural. The main components ofaffecting the color spectrum are chlorophyll, suspended particles and yellowsubstance, which are also known as "three elements of color." For vast offshore areasof China, the color spectrum mainly affected by suspended particles (organic andinorganic) spectral characteristics, and they have special distribution because of theinputing land source of the main entrance (such as Yellow River estuary, estuary ofthe Yangtze River). The purpose is to analyse the backscattering spectrumcharacteristics of suspended particulate of the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea area, investigate the difference between the two are as in this paper. This research selected200304spring voyage inherent optical measurement dataof the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea area as object, analysed the backscatteringand the backscattering rate spectrum characteristics of suspended particulate, established the function spectrum model of the backscattering and the backscatteringrate, and obtained the space distribution law of the backscattering and thebackscattering rate by using kriging interpolation method. Then, this paper analysedthe three major factors: particle size, types of particles and particulate matterconcentration, they have a significant impact on backscatter characteristics, obtaineddistribution law of the particle size spectra and refractive index as well as thecorrelation among the three influencing factors and the backscattering coefficient, revealed the differences in backscattering characteristics of suspended particles. The results indicate that, the space distribution law of the backscattering and thebackscattering rate are followed that the near Bank value are large and the far Bankvalue are small in the Yellow Sea and the East China Sea area. Inorganic particles aredominant and mainly general minerals particles in this area. The particles size and thedistance away from bank are in direct proportion, the refraction index and the distanceaway from bank are in inverse proportion. There are no correlation betweenbackscattering and the particles size distribution slope, the backscattering andparticles refraction index have quadratic function relationship. Alsoļ¼Œthere are positivecorrelation between backscattering and particles concentration. The research results of backscattering spectrum characteristics of suspendedparticulate are the basis for classification of water bodies in China, and for remotesensing retrieval of suspended matter concentration model and inherent opticalproperties of suspended substances.
