The dielectric barrier discharge (DBD) at atmospheric pressure could be of greatinterest for several industrial applications, such as thin-film deposition, plasmasterilization, wastewater treatment, surface modification etc.The generation of theatmospheric pressure discharge is even cutting-edge research, especially in the method ofbeing the homogeneous discharge, which is used in the industrial application. A dielectricbarrier discharge device-rotating electrode dielectric barrier discharge device is developedin the paper, which has been achieved more uniform discharge than the stationary electrodedischarge. It was found that whether in the stationary plate electrode or rotating plate electrode, the discharge image and its gray level distribution existed transient process, With the timedeveloping, the discharge transformed from the initial state of the irregular spatialdistribution into a more homogeneous steady-state discharge, the corresponding coefficientof variation of gray level distribution reduced. The electrode rotation was an importantameliorative condition, which was to accelerate the development of the transient process, sothat, it had a rapid transition to steady state, which was compared to the stationary steady, and the corresponding standard deviation and coefficient of variation decreased, ultimatelythey tended to a stable value, the homogeneity had been greatly improved. With theelectrode rotation speed, applied voltage and the frequency increased, the correspondinggray level distribution of the coefficient of variation decreased, the discharge ofhomogeneity had been improved. We also analysed the transient process, it was found thatthe relative motion of the residue space (including space charge) and the accumulatedcharges had a greater impact on the rotating electrode DBD.It was also found that gray level distribution of the rotating electrode DBD image wasnot homogeneous in the radial direction. The electrode rotation discharge could improve thehomogeneous of the radial distribution of the image, With the development of radial alongthe outward, the discharge image’s gray level distribution of the standard deviation andThe research is supported by the grant from the National Science Foundation of China, Grant No.50877033 coefficient of variation decreased. When the speed increased at a certain value (4000rpm),the radial distribution tended to the symmetry, and the consistency. The spatial homogeneitywhich was compared to the stationary got a good improvement. With the applied voltageand frequency increasing, the corresponding radial distribution of the gray level distributionof the coefficient of variation decreased, the discharge homogeneity was improved.By studying the transient process of rotating electrode DBD, it was proposed that thecondition of achieving homogeneous spatial distribution of discharge was: the electroderotation speed up to4000rpm or more, the high applied voltage, high frequency and whenrotating electrode the DBD reached the steady state.
