The wave radiation stress changes asthe variationof water depth induced by coastalconstruction activities, and the wave induced setup will also change. However, the designwater level used by the construction of coastal engineering never considers the water levelchange induced by the construction itself,which may result in harmful effects to theengineering. In order to evaluate whether the change of wave induced setup will threat thesecurity of the coastal engineering, this paper focuses on investigatingthe changes of waveinduced setup before and after the coastal engineering.Firstly, the Boussinesq model is applied to simulate the wave propagation and waveinduced set-up before and after the construction of breakwater. And the result shows thatthere is a significant increase in the wave induced setup, appeared in the breakwaterembankment toe. Clearly, this increase in water level will cause the destruction to thebreakwater and further threat the security. In order to understand the increase of the waveinduced setup due to the construction during the adverse sea conditions, based on thecoupled SWAN and ADCIRC model, a wave and storm surge interaction model isestablished to simulate the change of the storm surge before and after the construction ofthe coastal engineering. A series of computed results show that the storm surge does notchange significantly before and after the coastal engineering when the wave radiationstress does not take into account, while it changes significantly after considering the waveradiation stress. This shows that the wave radiation stress is the critical reason leading tothe increase of the storm surge before and after the construction of coastal engineering.There are some innovations in this paper: Based on the Boussinesq model, SWANmodel and ADCIRC model, the wave and storm surge coupled model is established topredict the change of the storm surge before and after the coastal engineering coupling thephysical processes. The results show that the storm surge will change significantly due tothe construction of coastal engineering and it may damage the coastal engineering. It alsoshows that the wave radiation stress is the main reason leading to the change of stormsurge before and after the construction of coastal engineering.
