The heavy rain, high winds, thunderstorms and other disastrous severe convective weather were analyzed and studied with the sounding data from WP-3000boundary layer wind profiler radar collected from May to October in2010, in combination with conventional weather charts, rainfall of automatic station and other auxiliary information. And the structural characteristics and activity patterns of heavy rain and other severe convective weather were summed up. According to the performance characteristics of wind profiler radar products and Doppler radar products during the process of heavy rainstorm,it was found that some obvious features of the horizontal wind profile, signal-to-noise ratio,vertical airflow, structure constant of refractive index from wind profiler radar products and basic reflectivity, radial velocity, wind profilers from Doppler radar products were showed at different time periods throughout the precipitation process, and the good corresponding relationship between the wind profiler radar products and Doppler radar products were displayed,which were very useful to short-term forecasting,nowcasting,the timely dissemination of warning signal and other meteorological disaster prevention and mitigation services.Calibration method of echo signal intensity and measurement of raindrop size distribution of the wind profiler radar were introduced in detail. The echo intensity of wind profiler radar and Doppler radar was comparatively analyzed, as a result, the measurement accuracy of wind profiler radar was proved. The measurement of raindrop size distribution with the wind profile radar was researched, then the calculation for raindrop size distribution by using the parametric approach and the method for the raindrop size distribution in the body of precipitation cloud by using wind profiler radar were introduced. At the same time,the detection principle of wind profiler radar,using specification of inversion system and the indicators of the product were comprehensively introduced. Two instances were studied in this paper:A short torrential rain on July20th in2010in Pukou of Nanjing was analyzed Using WP-3000wind profiler radar and a heavy rainfall process on July12th in2010was analyzed with the wind profiler radar and Doppler radar. The changes of the atmosphere in the precipitation process were intuitively reflected by using these image features.As a result,it was proved that wind profiler radar played an important role in the forecasting of heavy rain and other strong convective weather.The unique advantage of wind profiler radars in heavy rain forecast was confirmed by comparative analysis between the wind profiler radar and Doppler radar. Integrated use of the two kinds of radar had an important value in practical application and each radar played a unique advantage,which played a significant role on the accurate detection of heavy rain.The subtle changes of the atmosphere in the precipitation process were reflected intuitionaly and accurately by comprehensive analysis of the two radar products,which had great significance to weather forecast.Thus it was proved that wind profiler radar had important value in the forecasting of heavy rain and other severe convective weather.
