Metallic photonic crystals (MPCs) refer to as periodic arrangements of metallicstructures, including arrays of nanoholes, nanorods, or nanolines. Such metallicnanostructures are important because of their special physical properties based onparticle plasmon resonance. This thesis is concentrated on the fabrication andcharacterization of waveguided MPCs. Due to the strong coupling between thewaveguided resonance mode and particle plasmon resonance of gold nanostructures, new optical properties can be observed in waveguided MPCs. By means ofsuccessfully fabricating this structure and characterizing for it by optical extinctionspectroscopy, these properties can be more deeply studied and understood, and canalso lay the foundation for the widely application of MPC devices in biosensor andother fields.MPCs that have been fabricated under different annealing temperatures arestudied using extinction spectroscopy, where the angle-resolved extinction spectrahave been measured at TM and TE polarizations. Systematic analysis and comparisonhave been performed on the MPC devices that have been fabricated under differentconditions. MPCs consisting of gold nanoline gratings with each nanoline as narrowas100nm and a grating period of about400nm have been achieved. The MPCs havebeen applied subsequently in the sensor measurements, where the concentrations ofsugar solution have been measured with the sensor signal defined as the differencebetween the peak and the valley of the extinction spectrum. Thus, sensor signals havebeen acquired at difference concentrations of the solution. The experimental resultsshow linear dependence of the sensor signal on the concentration of the detectedsolution.
