There are different kinds of partners working in building sectors throughout the life cycle in construction industries, which results in a complexity of large amounts of information generated. Hence this renders an obvious obstacle in information communication and information sharing among each party. Because of lack of information, it has a much impact on the efficiency of management level to a great degree, nevertheless to the development of construction industries. In order to resolve this problem and improve the performance of management in construction industry, many researchers have identified that methods and technologies for information management should be utilized. Hence research on information building, management and sharing during the life cycle in construction projects has become an important research area in construction industry.According to the information management through life cycle in construction projects up to now, this paper aims to establish a general structure of Building Information Modeling (BIM) based platform for life-cycled information management and detailed implementations in construction projects. First of all, information and its characters in the life cycle of construction projects are analyzed to summarize current problems and their related possible reasons. Secondly, the advantages of BIM based information management platform in building projects are described. And the general structure of BIM based information management platform is introduced in detail from data level, matrix level and function module level. As for the detailed implementations, the first step is to build a web based coordinated platform from the aspects like structure, function design and implementation to ensure BIM based information management working in real time, fluently and safely. Moreover, an organized environment of BIM based information management is discussed from developing owners'driving effect, building web organization model and organization culture construction. About the detailed implementation, personnel staff, software and hardware should be considered seriously.The research on this topic can effectively avoid information loss and communication problems during information management process, and to provide theory support for construction projects lifecycle information management, is good for the realization of whole lifecycle information management goals.
