With the rapid development of national economy, our country has become a big quantity of automobile. Motor vehicle "overload" is also growing with the increasing of the extra car in a year. The registration of a new vehicle size by the vehicle management department regarded as an important means plays in a positive role in containing this phenomenon. The domestic vehicle detection technology is not mature because of the late starting in the field of vehicle detection. Therefore, developing a detection system which is low cost, convenient is very meaningful.This paper presents a new 3-D measure system based on the comparison and analysis of the existing detection technology. This system adopted the non-contact measuring method can measure the vehicle size including length, width and height quickly without parking. The characteristic of the system is the high measuring precision, fast detection speed and the completely automatic measuring process without human intervention. The system based on the infrared sensor for detecting tools makes a series of infrared scanning the fault section made up by the height and the width while it locates the vehicle position. Using ARM chip AT91SAM7S64 as the core of the control and date acquisition to complete the scanning date collection and sends them to the host computer through the network interface. The host computer completes the reconstruction of the three-dimensional contour after calculating and analyzing the received information. Meanwhile it gives the vehicle transfinite evaluation and the overloading data according to the relevant provisions of the state.
