This paper discusses the "Implementation of the Uplink and Downlink Synchronization for IEEE 802.16e" project, which mainly researches on two important technologies of OFDMA system based on IEEE802.16e standard including timing synchronization and frequency offset estimation in the downlink and initial ranging process in the uplink.Firstly, this paper studies timing synchronization and frequency offset estimation in the downlink. The implementation of synchronization in OFDMA system can be solved by the traditional synchronization methods in OFDM system. An improved algorithm is proposed, because the traditional ones are high in hardware resources and low in synchronization speed. Results show that the improved one has effectively reduced the complexity and time-consuming without affecting the performance of synchronization. Then, parallel processing of synchronization replaces the serial one. Simulation results show that the parallel algorithm has successfully accomplished synchronization as well as further reduced time-consuming. Finally, initial ranging in the uplink is discussed. According to the IEEE802.16e standard, a novel differential scheme for initial ranging processing is presented, too. Results indicate the proposed scheme decreased the probability of false alarm and misdetection.
