Slurry pipeline transportation technology was introduced to China from the West in the middle of the last century. It has been used widely in the mining field because it saves energy and money, it protects the environment, and it brings great economic benefit. The theory of process monitoring is a modern trend in industry which has become important to the science of slurry pipeline transportation. Process monitoring, in which fault diagnosis is of particular importance, will improve safety, promote efficiency, and improve production. This is accomplished by timely and effective recognition, analysis, and diagnosis in the system.First, the operating organization of a slurry pipeline transportation system is analyzed. The idea of employing different methods to diagnose the problems of a slurry pipeline transportation system is proposed which monitors all the functioning components. Aiming at stability of operation of slurry storage, clear water reservoir, separation tanks and valves and their convenient on-site apparatus monitoring, analysis methods for problem diagnosis are suggested. Since water pumps and pipelines have many variable parameters which make it difficult to build a precise mathematical model, the adoption of BP artificial neural network is proposed for fault diagnosis. Excellent simulation result is accomplished through use of on-site data.Then the overall design for the hardware and software of a slurry pipeline transportation monitoring system is made and the hardware and software for upper computer, lower computer, and on-site detecting apparatus are designed. Utilizing the method of PROFIBUS, configuration of both hardware and software are determined, picture monitoring is partly completed, and a slurry pipeline transportation monitoring system with comprehensive function is established.
