Air bearing force and relevant influence factors are critical in hard disk drive (HDD) technology. Specifically speaking, researchers need a more precise calculation of the air bearing force, and experimental research of its influence on the operations of HDDs due to the lower flying height of the slider, caused by higher storage density and data transmission speed. Therefore, an optimum choice of the calculation of the air bearing force is Direct Simulation Monte Carlo (DSMC) method, which simulates the physical movement of numerous simulative molecular and calculates force, temperature, and field. Besides, this method outweighs current ones in its ability dealing with chemical reactions, wide space scales and various geometrical shapes. In this research, pressure distributions by different heights are calculated using DSMC method. Moreover, the effects of air bearing force on head in different working conditions, such as read/write or load/unload processes, are studied in designed experiments.Firstly, former research on position and velocity distributions of molecular is reviewed, from which modifications are made after molecule model is selected. Afterwards, space is meshed and parameters are chosen according to the features of the head/disk interface. A model is set up for the coming up simulation.Secondly, air bearing pressure distribution is studied through DSMC method, based on which method algorithm is planned in detail and a calculation program is finished. Parameters are adjusted to simulate mutual effects between air, slider and disk under different flying heights, in which simulation 3-dimentional pressure distribution results are acquired. Finally, experimental research is carried out using various instruments including strain sensor with bridge circuit, laser displacement sensor, and so forth. Vibrations of the head under distinct pre-pressures, the effects of air bearing force on contact force, as well as vibrations of the head during load/unload process, are measured.
