The rapid growth of Internet traffic boosts the development of optical network technologies. It has been widely agreed that optical network will dominate future wireline networking solutions. Among the three optical networking paradigms - Optical Circuit Switch (OCS), Optical Packet Switch (OPS) and Optical Burst Switch (OBS), OPS is believed to be most appropriate in supporting the continued growth of internet traffic. OPS network is characterized by finest granularity, highest bandwidth utilization and scalability. As a new switching technology, OPS differs from existing IP networking practices in many aspects. One example is the packet aggregation and the fixed-size switching scheme. These differences make existing IP management approaches not applicable in OPS network environments. New nodal information model and management structures must be defined, before OPS based networking schemes become practically usable. On the other hand, managing the operational performances of OPS implementations can give us first hand run-time statistics of this switching technology, when applied in a data centric network environment, and is thus essential in understanding the behaviors of future switching scheme like OPS.This thesis work is part of NSFC Key Project of "Key Technology and Testbed of Optical Packet Switch". The author of the thesis participates in the project and is involved to design and implement edge node management system. Based on the project work, in this thesis, we will focus on nodal information model and management information in OPS network, and introduce the MIB structure of OPS network elements. The contributions of this thesis include:(1) From a network management perspective, we highlighted the differences between the OPS and existing IP networking schemes.(2) Following the descriptions of typical OPS edge and core network elements structures, we elaborated on the management information model for OPS edge and core node.(3) We implement an OPS network node management system based on MCU and FPGA. Detailed hardware and software designs are presented. We introduced our experiences in implementing an OPS network node management system. The rest of the paper is organized as follows.Firstly we give a brief introduction to optical switching technology and network management in OPS network. Secondly, from a network management perspective, we discuss the differences between OPS network node and traditional IP network. By analyzing the typical architecture and function of OPS network node, we summarize some important management information in OPS network. And we introduce the MIB structure of OPS network edge node. Then, we illustrate the implementation scheme of OPS network node management system in "Key Technology and Testbad of Optical Packet Switch" project. At last, we will summarize the thesis with outlook on what-is-the-next of OPS network management.
