Nowadays, email system has become the most important application in an enterprise's IT environment for data and information exchange. However, currently in China there are only a small portion of enterprises that have their own business email system deployed. Many small and medium sized enterprises are using free or VIP online mailboxes, or email hosting services from third party vendors. This brings threats on stability, management and security to their emails.To meet all the requirements on the email system, this thesis analyzes the reason why enterprises should build their own email system, and proposes an email system based on Exchange particularly for small and medium sized enterprises.To lower system cost is the No. 1 requirement from a small and medium sized enterprise. To address this concern, this thesis discusses the concept and advantages of virtualization, analyzes how to implement virtualization, achieves the virtualization deployment for email system and large-size mailbox configuration, and meets the low-cost request for small and medium sized enterprises.From the system performance perspective, this thesis performs pressure tests on email server response to client workload and storage array performance on disk reads and writes. The pressure test result shows that, all mail servers have good performance and can respond to client workload requests in a timely manner, and the storage system achieves one time IOPS more than the target, excellently meeting all the performance requirements of disk reads and writes. To achieve the goal of email system's high availability, local redundancy and site resiliency is deployed, and the failover test results shows the email system can get 99.999% high availability for email services. At the same time, this thesis studies and designs the email system to recover deleted emails or mailboxes by its own functionality, which removes the backup as a must for email system.Furthermore, this thesis analyzes the email safety challenge and utilizes multiple security strategies as well as anti-spam technology to resolve the problem that email servers and email accounts are easily being attacked from virus and junk emails.In a word, the email system realized in the thesis can meet all the requests from small and medium sized enterprises simultaneously, including low-cost, functionality, high availability and email security, and provides stable and high effective email service for enterprise users.
