With the rapid development of high-precision optical fiber sensor,with the increasement transmission rate to communication system, it's very important to control the polarization of system. The appearance of polarization maintaining fiber (PMF) improves transmission quality of the polarized light and expands the application range of fiber components, study on transmission characteristics of polarization maintaining optical fiber have certain practical significance.This paper summarizes the development of present situation of the domestic and international in PMF technology, we have analyzed the working principle and characteristics of PMF, and have analyzed and measurement characteristic parameters of PMF.a setup for measuring the beat-length is designed, the mode birefringence of fiber is calculated by the experimental results. A setup for measuring the polarization in PMF is designed, the relation between the output power and rotation angle of three kinds of optical fiber is measured with and without a magnetic field, we analyzed the experimental results and calculated the extinction ratio, the experimental results of our paper have the certain reference value in optical transmission application area.
