To reduce the co-channel interference and to enhance cell capacity, as well as to improve signal quality, the switched-beam smart antenna system is usually employed in base station in the mobile radio systems. In this paper, the probability of co-channel interference is evaluated by using switched-beam smart antennas operating in fading and shadowing environment. In the analyzing, the outage probability, the number of channels in each cell, the protection ratio, the mean value and the standard deviation of co-channel, the beam-width and side-lobe level of antenna arrays are taken in consideration as parameters. The simulating results as well as some important conclusions are obtained for analyzing the capacity improvement. Furthermore, the project for cellular system using multibeam smart antenna is discussed in this paper. The number of beam is 4 in the discussion. The system model is established modularly and each module is introduced detailedly. The calculating results and designing model lay the foundation for the existed cellular mobile system over switched-beam smart antenna systems.
