In model testing, it is always hoped to place the minimum number of sensors on the best locations, i.e. to realize the optimal sensor placement, for the sake of obtaining better result with fewer time and lower cost. Sensor placement is especially critical for the modal testing of large complex engineering structures. However, in a real modal test, generally the sensors are placed only according to the experience of the operator. This thesis focuses on the method and application of the sensor/shaker placement in the modal testing, which are valuable in the structural engineering. The main contents of this thesis are as the following: (1) Three common algorithms for optimal sensor/shaker placement, the effective independence algorithm, modal kinetic energy algorithm and cumulated algorithm based on QR factorization are examined. (2) A method for determining the optimal number of sensors is studied. (3) On the basis of three finite element models of the GARTEUR plane, the above algorithms are compared with each other. (4) Additional measurement degrees of freedom are configured to obtain the complete mode shapes. (5) A modal test for the GARTEUR plane model is performed to validate the placement result.
