Since 1990's, with the fast development of computer technique, information processing and network communication, as one of the most important techniques in the field of information security, information hiding has also made rapid development. Information hiding is a new technology that combines many subjects together, which includes computer, communication, encoding, signal processing, and statistics and so on.This thesis discusses a steganographic algorithm for palette-based images. In this paper, the hiding steganographic algorithm is based on Human Visual System, divide the cover image into three parts, which is smooth, texture and edge. Then make the different amalgamation coefficient in different areas in order to amalgamation the digital images. The Arnold transformation is used as pre-processor and post-processor for digital images. Moreover, with the format of BMP palette image, hide the scrambling coefficient in the palette, and improve the security of the hiding secret information. When dealing with the problem of how to distinguish between edge and texture regions in image block classification, we use variation coefficient as the discriminant criteria instead of variances which are most commonly used in the literature, leading to a good result by avoiding the instability due to the use of variances in threshold selection. At last, the steganography is implemented using Matlab tool, and a detailed analysis is done on the algorithm performance.
