Awkward Person Of University Field

Abstract/Summary:
In China, college counselors have a most awkward role in university field: dual identity that is cadres and teacher. But this identity is not clear for college counselors; as teachers, they are not as academic as the real university teachers who are academic for their purpose. For the top standard of academy in universities, counselors are not respected as the professors. As managers, the counselors are in the low level of the administrative order that they can not manage the other teachers and staffers. However, as a matter of fact, the dual identity of the college counselors includes a lot of practical contents: as teachers, their responsibility is ideological and political education; as cadres, they have a great power to manage students. College counselors are in dilemma position in China: they can only work in their youth and have to leave their post because of old age.Although there are already a number of studies on college counsellors, there are few practical studies on the living condictions of their awkward identity. The thesis uses one case to make a practical study. It uses deep interview and participant observation to describe real situation of counselors in universities and know their feelings, living and development conditions in work. Meanwhile, the thesis is to explain the living conditions of college counselors with Bourdieu's field theory that the core concepts of this theory are field and capital, quoting counselors'spoken words to describe the living conditions of college counselors.The thesis concludes four chapters:Chapter 1: introduced the origin of the research, for the definition of core concepts that were field, capital and counselors and so on, on the basis of the state of the research in home and aboard is to organize and analyze. Furthermore, the purpose is to clear the problem and the idea of the research.Chapter 2: described the present state of the counselors in field. The thesis thinks that is to know the present state of the counselors in field, the thesis has discussed three issues: firstly, how the counsellors treat their embarrassing state of their presence? Secondly, what is the reason for the counselors only to eat young rice? Finally, how counsellors consider their work? In field, counselors'embarrassing state is to behave the following contents: they are not academic as teachers; as cadres, they can not manage other teachers and staffers. Counselors are in awkward pposition in university field as result because of their incomplete dual identity. Because of counselors'age, time, energy and the development choice of occupation to make the average career of counsellors is relatively short. Usually, only young people can be engaged in this profession, and few people have made counsellor as a lifelong career. Although counselors are very awkward in field, the average career of counsellors is relatively short; they do not regret to make the work and think that the counselor is a changing career. As a result, the career affects them.Chapter 3: introduce their choice to leave this field. The main part is to analyze the ways, reasons and policies for their departure. Although counselors'identity is very awkward, the awkward identity of the counsellors has provided possible ways for their departure; their last goal is to be cadres or teachers. But evaluations of the university, gender roles, and personal expectations of teachers have played a key role for counselors in their selecting in cadres or teachers. The counselor will actively take the initiative to compete for capital, especially the emphasis on cultural capital for the development goals. Under the coordination of economic capital and social capital, counselors will achieve their career goals.Chapter 4: the thoughts of the counselor's management system. The consideration and proposal for adjustment and reform of the counsellor management system will mainly connect the modern university system with the experience of student affairs system in England and America. Firstly, the thesis thinks that counselor system should be improved; the purpose is to make counsellor management accord to law; secondly, it is important to establish Counselors Association, for example, association, academic association, union and so on, as a result of pushing the development of counselors profession and specialization. Thirdly, for the university, the thesis mainly concludes instructor evaluation system, incentives system, rational distribution system and the flow mechanism to make recommendations for the counselor concrete management system. Finally, the thesis thinks that the counsellors should rethink their own, because the counselor is strong subjective as a reflection subject of the main field. The self-reflection is favorable for the counselors to promotee their self-improvement and development.All in all, the counselor is a community that is worthy of paying attention to research in university field. Their living condition is important to counselors'development and student affairs. It needs further consideration.
