Vocabulary teaching has not been paid adequate attention for a long time. The situation has not changed much since 1970s. Nowadays, the importance of vocabulary learning and teaching has aroused great attention of the experts both at home and abroad. By realizing that, they did a lot of research on vocabulary teaching. However, in our daily teaching, students usually complain that they can not memorize the words, or it is easy for them to forget the words. Sometimes, they do not know how to use the words even if they memorize them. All of the problems in vocabulary learning make the students feel it difficult to learn English.The main purpose of this survey is to understand the students'vocabulary learning concept, the strategies they use and the differences between the students who major in art and science. The whole paper is divided into five chapters. Chapter 1 introduces the importance of vocabulary learning and necessity of research on vocabulary learning strategies. Chapter 2 presents a general overview of the research on learning strategies and vocabulary learning strategies from the beginning to the present development. And it also describes the definition and classification. Chapter 3 shows the design of the survey and points out the problems. It also presents the research methods and research tools and explains how to collect and analyze the research data. Chapter 4 describes the result and discussion. Chapter 5 draws a conclusion and the implication from the survey. Chapter 6 summarizes the process. It also acknowledge the limitations of the research.Firstly, the paper analyzes the importance of vocabulary learning and necessity of research on vocabulary learning strategies. The paper points out the vocabulary learning is a long-term task for the students. Once they grasp the suitable strategies, they can build up effective vocabulary collection. For the teachers, they have to get to know the amount of the students'vocabulary and usage of learning strategies, so that they can help the students to develop the suitable vocabulary learning strategies.Secondly, the paper analyzes the definition and classification of the learning strategies. And also it reviews the results of research. Based on the research, the author made a survey on the vocabulary learning strategies of high school students.Thirdly, by analyzing the results of the survey, the author tries to find out the concept of the students'vocabulary learning strategies, the use of the students'vocabulary learning strategies and the differences in vocabulary learning strategies adopted by students who major in art and science.Finally, after analyzing the results, the author makes some suggestions on improving the students'learning methods and vocabulary learning strategies.
