The research on Class size in the United States over the past centry, especially after the implementation of STAR project which was followed by a series of experiments or studies, have a profound impact to society and other countries. In recent years , scholars in our country have done some reasearches about theory of small size teaching. In some areas, small class teaching are carried out. But on the whole, whether the doctrine or the practical experience of small class teaching are still weak. From this issue, based the Eric, Sagepub and Google Scholar three date bases, this artical collected some English literatures of United States' small class teaching. Then a detailed discussion on the history of about a century's small class teaching. By vertical and horizontal analysis about the views, ways, contents and conclusions of the researches to give a complete outline about the United States's small class teaching. So as to provide theoretical and practice guidance for the implement of small class teaching in our country.This paper includes four parts:The first part is an introduction, including the issues, research methods, the purpose and significance, and basic concept.The second part is the U.S. history of small class teaching and research process, including determination of the type of research in small classes, small class teaching and research of the historical process, typical small class teaching experiment in the U.S and the situation about 21 century small class teaching.The third part is the content of small class teaching and research in the 21st century America. Mainly based on the effect of small class teaching, small class teaching's disadvantages in students' academic achievement , small class teaching on different cultural backgrounds students, small class teaching affect the behavior of primary and secondary students, small class teaching on teaching ability, behavior and values, small class teaching in the 21st century to discuss.The fourth part is the conclusion and reference, including some conclusions draw from small class teaching's experiences in the U.S, the United States learn from small class teaching.
