Abstract/Summary:
In order to improve the effectiveness of classroom teaching, English teachers in high schools have to adopt not only new ideas of English teaching, but also new concepts of classroom assessment and evaluation paradigm. However, the majority of the English teachers tend to ignore the classroom assessment and thus have caused problems to classroom teaching. To solve these problems, it is believed that the classroom evaluation has to be transformed from'the assessment of learning'into'the assessment for learning'.Inspired by the transformation, this paper introduces a new type of assessment, Classroom Assessment Promoting English Learning, including its contents and operational framework. Then taking the classroom teaching of Mode16 Unit 4 in Advance with English as an example, an empirical study was carried out with 94 senior high students in order to explore the effect of the Assessment on English classroom teaching, and based on the results, the paper later comes up with the Assessment design standards and its operational techniques. The results of the study show that the Assessment can improve the students' confidence in English learning in many ways, including their learning of language skill, interest, attitude and learning strategies; and that the Assessment can, to some degree, help the students perform better in their language tests. In addition, this paper also intends to present a step-by-step paradigm for conducting a Classroom Assessment Promoting English Learning in practice.
