Grammar is an indispensable aspect of language. It is also an important and difficult part in Chinese students' language learning. Under the current circumstances, how to teach grammar is a worthwhile question. A constructivist approach is supposed to be an effective method in promoting learners' language competence. Constructivist theory has been applied in many aspects, such as listening, oral spoken English, reading, writing ect. While there are few reports about the application of constructivist theory in senior grammar teaching or learning. In this thesis, a research was conducted on the Attributive Clause in order to probe into the validity and feasibility of the constructivist model in grammar teaching. The students are f from the Second Senior High School of the Economic Development Zone in Yingkou, Liaoning Province. Constructivist grammar teaching was used in the experiment class, while traditional teaching approach in the controlled class. The experiment lasted eighteen weeks and data were collected through language tests. Logical analysis method and the combination of quantity and quality method are used during the thesis. SPSS software was used to make analysis of the data gained from the research. Results demonstrated that the results of the experimental class and control class exist significant difference, the former is better than the later one. It shows that constructivist method did better in improving learners' grammatical competence. It was also discovered that there existed significant difference about the maintenance of the gains from the experiment. Although the present research has many limitations, it has its significance. Because there are so few researches about Constructivist grammar teaching in Chinese middle schools. It is a meaningful practice in teaching Attributive Clause based on constructivist model. The result obtained from this research is valuable and meaningful for the further research about grammar teaching. |
