| The statistics presented here can't be sufficiently persuasive to the reader to realize the serious situations which rural students face at present without the three years'teaching experience in the rural junior high school.I was arranged to teach the second year in the junior high school. So the students from the second year are the main participants of my research. There are 8 classes, altogether 374 students in the second. We, altogether 4 English teachers, each are in charge of two classes. From the results of the final examinations every semester, I can see that the passing rate seems rather pity. Only 9 or 10 percent students can get pass. That means average 4 or 5 students out of 40 can get pass. The results of the other students are remained unsatisfactory.New curriculum reformation obviously requires that"students must learn to use knowledge rather than learn the knowledge itself. It also requires students to cultivate the students'competence in using the English language practically, develop the cooperative spirit. Finally establish the good quality of smooth cooperation, outrageous forward and artistic communication."However, through observation in my working school, a lot of rural junior school students study English passively. Teacher's methods of giving knowledge seem extremely monotonous. Teachers ignore the major role of the students in the classroom; these kinds of phenomenon make students have less interest on English learning. Their natural exploratory spirit is killed definitely. The fact demonstrates that the old traditional way of teaching seriously restraint students learning competence, we need new ideas and approaches to teach English.A large amount of professional research demonstrates that cooperative learning is one of the most effective learning strategies under the background of the new curriculum reformation Cooperative learning can improve the low achiever's academic achievements most. Cooperative learning can also create relaxing natural classroom atmosphere, stimulate students'learning motivation, increase the individual learner's self-confidence and self-esteem, which are all extremely beneficial to English teaching and provide the real linguistic environment. My paper takes the"the improvement of the cooperative abilities of low achievers in rural junior high school"as my investigating angle, I choose 66 low achievers from my working school as my investigating subjects. I collect information through the techniques of pretest and posttest, questionnaire as well as the interviews.According to the results of the survey, cooperative learning was significantly more effective than the traditional ways in English teaching, especially on the stimulation of the students'motivation, the improvement of the classroom interest. After one semester's experiment, I find that the degree of the students'favor on English lessons have improved greatly, their academic achievements are much better than before. One thing is really worthy of our noticing that teachers'appropriate classroom administrator is the key to the success of the cooperative learning strategy. |
