In recent years, China, especially the major cities of the country, has been confronted with the problem of the aging society. Meanwhile, with the dramatic changes in the family structure, the traditional family's capacity for supporting the aged parents is decreasing. And yet, due to the high cost, old-age-support by institutional is unable to be promoted. In this context, the task of coming up with a workable old-age-support system has become even more pressing. The thesis, based on the past old-age-support systems, proposes the concept of "Urban home-dwelling old-age-support system" with the considerations of the Chinese cultural characteristics and future urban needs of the old-age-support system. Further, the thesis, taking the example of Shanghai YJ community old-age-support system, offers a description of the ways of operation, characteristics and problems of the system. Meanwhile, comparisons are made among the traditional family support system, institutional support system and the urban home-dwelling support system in light of standards such as the preferences and cost of the aged people, the cost of public expenditure and the quality of services. The article also explores the feasibility of Urban home-dwelling old-age-support system along with some suggestions.
