Yan-Li school was different in the beginning of the Qing dynasty, which raised questions on the Confucian school of idealist philosophy of Song and Ming dynasties, advocated to reinstate the ancient period of Xia, Shang and Zhou dynasties and treat the "six virtues","six norms", and "six arts" as the real saint knowledge. Great developments of the Yan-Li school had been made in the end of the Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. From the high appreciation on the Yan-Li school by the reviews of the famous scholars at that time on the academic history of the Qing dynasty to the establishment of the FOUR-Preserve society suggested by Xu Shichang and the establishment and development of the Four-Preserve private school, this THESIS talks about the development and renaissance of the Yan-Li school in that period. The renaissance background and the evaluation are based on these materials and facts.The paper can be divided into four chapters. The preface deals with the reasons why this topic has been chosen and a general introduction of the research findings. Besides it also includes the reviews and summaries of relative academic conditions and the analysis of the defects and the research gaps in them. The part also contains the historical material and the methodology with the specific exposition of the Yan-Li school's expansion in this period.The first chapter introduces the birth and pass-down of the Yan-Li school. In this part, it analyzes the social background of producing the Yan-Li school and gives a brief introduction of the life stories of Yan Yuan and Li Gong and their thoughts. This part also outlines the pass-down of Yan-Li school and explains reasons of its lost.The second chapter consists of the evaluation on Yan-Li school by the academia in the end of Qing dynasty and the beginning of the Republic of China. The scholar representatives are Zhang Taiyan, Liu Shipei, Liang Qichao and Hu Shi, etc. They publicized the Yan-Li school from the point of academic reviews and presented their essays on evaluating the school with their attitudes.The third chapter is the critical part. This part deals with the social conditions of Yan-Li school's renaissance and the personal story of Xu Shichang who did a great job for the prosperity of Yan-Li school. It gives the details of the establishment and development of the Four-Preserve Society and School including the rules of the Society and the contents of its periodical——Four-Preserve Monthly. The development of Four-Preserve School and the students'courses and achievements also widely demonstrate the progress of Yan-Li school.The forth part is the summary to give an objective view of how to evaluate the Four-Preserve Society and the renaissance of Yan-LI School. The Four-Preserve Society is of some conservativeness but plays a very important role in passing down the Yan-Li school. Xu Shichang is a key figure in reviving the Yan-Li school. His philosophy of culture presents certain contradiction due to his-particular identity and the cross-era. His philosophy of culture will be initially generalized and evaluated again in the end of this thesis.Summary, on the contents of this paper summary, to make a comprehensive summary about Yan-Li school's establishment,development and renaissance. It leaves later generations thinking.
