With the development of the photography, the history of news illustrations faced a revolution. On the other hand, this just a crisis to the documentary hand painting, freehand drawing got an even larger space, such as the works of woman artist Kathe Kollwitz published on Simplicissimus at the end of nineteenth century to Mid-twentieth Century. Kollwitz's imagery is marked by poverty stricken. Her work serves as an indictment of the social conditions in Germany during the late19th and early20th century.This paper recalls the history of the news illustrations and describes the forms, and focus on freehand drawing of newspapers in western countries. At the background of history of newspapers, society and art, analyze the works of Kollwitz. Based on the theory of New Art History, on the background of times and society, the paper interpret the information of politics and society, and interpret with Semiotic Analysis.
