The Research Of Milan·Kundera's Novel Theory

This dissertation deals with the topics in the poetics on novels of Czech-French novelist Milan Kundera (born in 1929). This thesis starts from theoretical connotation in Kundera's novels, and makes general interpretation about various theoretical and practical formations. It also makes deep analysis about inherent laws in Kundera's poetics on novels, from its function to creation, from narrative structure to history of fiction, which are all generalizations made by him. This thesis also digs deeper into factors which influence his poetics on novels, especially the influence on his writing structure, language and psychology. It helps to analyze his motives behind creation. Meanwhile, based on Kundera's poetics on novels, we can look forward to the future and discuss the inspiration on modern novels and contemporary art.I divide this thesis into four parts. The second and the third part act as the developing parts. In the first part, namely the introduction, I will introduce the writer and his work, give an analysis on study of Kundera's novels, and raise the question. In the second part, I will analyze theoretical connotation in his novels, dig out and summarize the theory essence, including his viewpoint on novels, narrative structure, his view of novel history, etc. This is the main part of my thesis. Based on Kundera's fiction theory, this part proposes some poetic problems and tries to find solutions to them.The third chapter mainly analyzes the factors that influence Kundera's novels, including effects of music fugue on narrative structure, philosophy's influence on his novel language and immigration's influence on the writer's creation psychology, and analyzes the deep reasons of esthetic theory in poetics. With the development of research, the uniqueness of Kundera's fiction theory becomes more and more apparent, which lies in the formal poetics to reform the writing style, the philosophical poetics to explore being, and the history poetics to divorce from plot. Meanwhile, it elevates the research on Kundera's writing style to a higher degree of "the wisdom of novel", and explores the rational, critical, suspicious, and dialogical spirits in Kundera's fiction theory. The fourth chapter discusses the enlightenments of Kundera's novel poetics to the modern novel and modern art based on Kundera's poetics. Generally, this paper is an attempt to research poetics theory from text itself. The paper stresses on an overall observation of Kundera's fiction theory, novels, and literary criticism but more focus in put on studying Kundera's fiction theory. At the same time, it deeply analyzes Kundera's essential ideas of novel and narration characteristics through combination of "form analysis", "implication analysis", and "context analysis". It also concludes the value of Kundera's literary creation and observes various factors that influence Kundera's writing, especially the philosophy, which endows the poetics with the profound implication. And it explores the historical clue and the time spirit hidden in Kundera's writing background, defines the position of Kundera's fiction theory in the novel history and explores Kundera's distinguished view of novel.Finally we arrive at the conclusion:by using excellent techniques, Kundera refreshes tradition novel as a type of writing. He produces poetic form of integration dialogue, challenges the existing dialectic poetics as well as the historical poetics which devoid of historical circumstances, and forms aesthetic existentialist poetics system. Under the current literary context, Kundera advocates the sense of rationality, dialogue, criticism and skepticism, that is, the relative sprit in novel writing. His achievements provide a possibility for more openness of novels and integration of different types of writing, thus promotes the characteristics of openness and dialogue at the level of novel ontology.
