Originated in Italy, Renaissance was an important stage of the rise of modern European civilization. It also witnessed Europe from a feudal medieval to a modern time. As the birthplace of the Renaissance movement and a pioneer, Italy was the most economically developed regions in Europe.Wedding was a very important community and social activity in Italian Renaissance. Both for the nobility and civilians, the wedding was an opportunity to show off wealth. Since the rise of art activities, many existing arts and crafts showed wedding scenes. Moreover, with the painting techniques grow, a lot of images depicted the details of wedding dress clearly. This provided a wealth of visual material for the costume study of the period. Now, the domestic research for Renaissance costume is rarely seen, let alone wedding dress in the same period, which left a considerable space for this article.This essay, combined with two elements together, namely the women wedding costume and the images, focuses on the Renaissance images of women in the wedding dress. The author chooses 25 images, combined with other images of the same period, to find the characteristics of the wedding dress that time. Meanwhile, from the art and crafts perspective, it digs into how people in Renaissance Italy think of wedding dress, to find the deeper meaning hidden in the images.As to research methods, this essay applies both methods of clothing history and art history. It also applied Panofsky's three-step approach to study the images. Namely the pre-iconography, iconography and Iconology, which can be also interpreted as image information describing, image background analysis, and interpretation of the images. In the course of the study, this essay also put the study in certain cultural scenarios, introducing the different customs of wedding in different area of renaissance Italy. In addition, this essay applied "image of image" as study material, that is, the printed copies of the original images. In the specific analysis part, firstly, this essay summarizes the information of all the images, and gets different periods of costume from the images. Respectively, they are:Phaseâ… (1435-1494) and Phaseâ…¡(1590-1609). In addition, in all images, there are two that has its own characteristics, so the author take these two as exceptions, lists as one part separately after the two periods. Then, according to different characteristics, the author pick up typical images shown the characteristics of clothing and images, to research the typical images deeply from top to bottom.Through research, this essay found the Italian name of women's wedding dress in Renaissance images, and find the relevant translation of English and Chinese from related literature. Then, the author draws black and white line drawings to show the dress correspondently. Finally, in order to find out the meaning behind the images, this essay summarizes the characteristics of women's wedding dress in the images of Renaissance Italy, bridal adornment elements and how the images and costume features reflect the position of women in Renaissance Italy.
