"Memory culture", also known as "collective memory" refers to the common memory shared, inherited and established by a group of people in a community. It is known to all that the past 20th century played a significant role in the history, which also greatly influenced the civilization of human being. And among those important historical events in the 20th century, it is no wonder that the World Warâ…¡and the massacre of Jewish people has become the most impressive "collective memory" of German people, whose influence is really profound. As time passes by, the literature works and movies concerned with this special "collective memory" has been emerging constantly. German people have always been in the attitude of being responsible for the history and having a sense of commitment to search their conscience.The paper first introduces the Maurice Halbwachs (a French writer) and Jan Assman's (a German writer) theoretical interpretation of Memory culture, based on which the thesis analyses the formation of the concept, Memory culture, and its specific manifestations in Germany. And then the paper presents the great significance of Postwar Literature in German people's "Memory culture". In the Chapter four and five, through analyzing the typical representatives of the Postwar Literature, Der (?)(?)er and Deutschstunde, from the perspective that the heroes' different cognitions of "guilty" and "sense of responsibility and obligation", the thesis further explores the realistic meaning of combining Memory culture with literature works, that is, to ignore the history is to betray the reality.
