A painting can not be produced without a tool. What tool to use and how to use it are critical to the value of a painting as well as to representing the painter's thoughts. Therefore, we should gradually acquaint ourselves with sketch tools and understand their performance through practice, so as to give full play to their strengths as well as express our own thoughts efficiently and effectively. As Xu Beihong teaches his students:"A workman must sharpen his tools if he is to do his work well."The tool used mostly in a sketch is pencil but only few truly understand its performance and even few are skilled in control of it. Without full understandings of the tool's performance, one can not achieve his creative intentions or master the tool's characteristics and the skills to use it.This article is centered on a commonly used tool--pencil, to deal with its great effect on sketches at a different angle. The first part deals with the development course of sketch tools as well as the continuous innovation of painting tools to demonstrate the historical necessity of the emergence of pencil. The second part deals with comparison of pencil with several commonly used tools such as charcoal and pen, and focuses on the strengths of pencil's use in sketches. The third part deals with pencil's performance including not only its emergence and classification but also how to practice it with great skills and then to master related painting skills. The fourth part deals with the mistaken ideas as well as the ways to conquer them. This part also explores methods to use a tool to its full potential for the purpose of perfect interpretation of a sketch. The last part deals with pencil's role in artistic expression through appreciation of pencil drawings by some masters. In the course of research, the author uses clear points in the article to fully support the hypothesis with the help of pictures and words, books and collected network information as well as supervisor and fellow students who have offered the author a helping hand to acquire a new dimension and a better understanding of painting and painting tools, which enables the author to view the problem from a multitude of perspectives and to state the main idea creatively and adequately.
