Bao Chao And The Ting Army

Bao Chao,supported by Hulinyi, set up the army which was named the Ting army in 1865.The Ting army played an important role in repelling the Taiping army and the eastern Nian army.It fought against the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom movement in Hubei,Anhui,Jiangxi,Guangdong and other provinces.It gradually became the main part of the Xiang army group.Then,it fought against the eastern Nian army and made a great victory in Yinlonghe campaign.After the Yinlonghe campaign,Bao Chao retired because of curing his disease and returned to his native home.The Ting army was dissolved for losing leadership.Bao Chao rebuilt the Ting army twice.The first rebuilding was to guard the capital city and its environs in 1880 when Sino-Russian relation became intensional during Yili negotiation.The second time rebuilding was as backup military in 1884 during the Sino-French war.Bao Chao was an important general, and the Ting army under his leadership was the essence of the Xiang army group in late Qing dynasty.The Master`s thesis researches the Ting army`s social background, characteristics,rise and fall process through Bao Chao`s individual experiences according to historical material and previous studies.A comprehensive analysis about Bao Chao and the Ting army`s rise and fall is given based on present held historical material according to objective and impartial attitude.The Master's thesis possibly reflects correlative historical aspects about Bao Chao and the Ting army through systemic and relative integrated discussion.
