This research first presents the synaesthetic metaphors in Longfellow's poems and concludes the characteristics of synaesthetic metaphors in his poems by quantitative and qualitative analysis. Then the synaesthetic metaphors will be analyzed by Conceptual Integration Theory to dig out the deeper factors which influence Longfellow's creation of synaesthesia, such as cognitive style and cognitive perspectives to demonstrate the writing style of the poet. Thus this research provides a new angle to people to enjoy Longfellow's poems. People can understand his poems better, and at the same time they can grasp the principles and special emotional functions of synaesthesia in literature works.In order to achieve the above research purposes, a set of questions should be solved first and they can be listed as follows:(1) What are the characteristics of Longfellow's synaesthetic metaphors? (2) What are the inclinations of his synaesthetic adoption? Do the synaesthetic metaphors abide by the law concluded by Ullmann? (3) What are the cognitive factors influencing Longfellow's synaesthetic creation?In order to solve the above problems, the author collects 217 synaesthetic metaphors from The Poetic Works of Henry Wadsworth Longfellow and adopts both quantitative and qualitative analysis to analyze the source data. Quantitative analysis is used to obtain the frequency of the appearance of all kinds of synaesthetic metaphors, and quantitative analysis is used to conclude the characteristics and inclination of Longfellow's synaesthetic creation and dig out the cognitive factors influencing his creation of synaesthesia.Based on the above methodologies, following conclusion can be drawn.(1) Longfellow is most inclined to use certain words in creating all kinds of synaesthesia. which can reflect his instant mood vividly and his writing style.(2) By presenting and classifying synaesthetic metaphors in Longfellow's poems. the author find that synaesthestic metaphors created by Longfellow all abide by Ullmann's findings as synaesthetic transfer in Longfellow's poems abide by the "hierarchical distribution" raised by Ullmann. touch and vision are the predominant source and the predominant destination, respectively.(3) By analyzing the representative synaesthetic metaphors in Longfellow's poem from the perspective of CIT, the author can draw some findings listed as follows:â‘ As to the writing style. Longfellow is good at revealing his inner mood by depicting the surroundings and adopting certain rhetoric to beautify his poems.â‘¡As to the cognitive perspectives, his cognitive perspectives of synaesthesia are lower sensory perceptions.â‘¢As to cognitive style, his cognitive style belongs to field-independence. |
