New Historicism expresses its particular understanding of history. It has a great impact on the literary works of historical themes and has altered the traditional view of history. Khaled Hosseini conforms to this trend and creates his second novel A Thousand Splendid Suns in which he re-examines the history of Afghanistan in about 30-year wars from a new perspective and with a new discourse. This novel coincides with the main points of New Historicism, based on which thesis attempts to analyze the historical background, the themes and the characters of the novel. The thesis is divided into three parts: Chapter One analyzes the background of the history of the novel. The writer re-examines the history of Afghanistan by"histories", abandoning"History', to describe the common people and presents the history of Afghanistan in about 30-year wars to the readers. Chapter Two analyzes the themes of the novel. Based on the interpretation of women's destiny of their unceasing struggle, this chapter summarizes the theme that love enables people to get redemption. Chapter Three analyzes the development of women's self-consciousness in the context of history. By analyzing two different kinds of male images, the view is presented that the healthy development of society relies on the harmonious relationship between males and females. The Conclusion sums up the main points of the three chapters, and anticipates a multi-layer study of the novel. The thesis is a thorough analysis of Khaled Hosseini's novel from the viewpoint of New Historicism. The thesis contributes not only to the study of New Historicism but also to the study of Khaled Hosseini's novel A Thousand Splendid Suns in China.
