The Public Signs Chinese-English Translation And Countermeasures

Signs are widely applied in every aspect of our lives, hence they have a great effect on us. Signs have four outstanding functions—indication,prompt,restriction,constriction——conveying either dynamic or static information with their own language characteristics. The vocabulary used in English signs forms distinctive language style,such as nouns,verbs,gerunds,acronyms,standardized and local words and so on. However,there might be many mistakes in the process of translating signs from Chinese to English,for instance:spelling disorder,grammatical error,catachresis,chinglish,literally piecing,meaning ambiguity,cultural misunderstanding and so on. This dissertation is going to summarize the skills and strategies of translating signs from Chinese to English by analyzing the mistakes mentioned above in order to study the principles of it. According to the problems in the examples,this dissertation will provide effective methods of translating signs through analyzing the problems and summing up the experience.
