Human beings cannot survive in the objective world without recognition. Meanwhile, human beings also cannot survive in the subjective world without language. Thinking is metaphorical, and so is language, thus, metaphor is essential for the generation and development of language. The study of language will be inseparable from the study of metaphor.More and more importance of metaphor theory has been realized since a large number of linguists have made profound research from the multiple perspectives as Lakoff did in the 80s of the 20th century. The emphasis of the study was shifted from simple theoretical research to applied one which combined with other fields. The thesis is based on the combination of the metaphor and the college English teaching practice together, exploring and inspecting the specific methods in applying metaphor in the intensive English class.The thesis is composed of six parts, the prolegomenon introduces the purpose and significance of this research. Chapter one expounds the development of metaphor and metaphorical thinking. Chapter two examines the basic concepts and theories of the thesis. Chapter three analyzes the current situation and problems of the intensive English teaching. Chapter four is the central part, giving an account of how to conduct and observe the experiment. The final part is the conclusion, summarizing the thesis and coming to the results.By analyzing the metaphorical thinking and intensive English teaching, come to the following results which can improve the students'English level and foster students'capability of SRL and shift the role of teachers and establish the new type of learning View and teaching view.
