YanWenLiang (1893-1988), who occupies an important position in Chinese modern art history and art education history, is the outstanding Chinese artists and art educator in twentieth century.As one of the pioneers of Chinese modern art education career in early twentieth century, YanWenLiang founded Suzhou Arts Technical College in 1922. For over sixty years, he has dedicated all his energy and intelligence to expanding and cultivating in art education field, thus he has students all over the country. After the national colleges'adjustments in 1952, Yan WenLiang went to Hangzhou and worked as leader and teacher in Zhejiang Academy of Fine Arts. At that time, though he had been in his sixty, he was extremely responsible for the teaching work, in order to promote art education career of new China. YanWenLiang has devoted all his life to mastering color and perspective. Besides teaching, he compiled some masterpieces on perspective and color study in spare time, such as: The Art of Perspective,Talk about Color. And he also wrote plenty of relevant articles, which contributed a lot for popularizing art knowledge and techniques, and played a positive role in the fine arts and art education development."To lay equal stress on both the fine arts and the practical fine arts","To achieve the unity of the truth , the good and the beautiful in talent cultivation","To advocate the social service function of the fine arts", etc. Those are all his educational claims, which play an important role on the development of art education, the cultivation of art talents. His art education idea and practice have established his high position in Chinese modern art history and art education history; meanwhile, they also help us a lot for reference and inspiration on contemporary art education practice. Therefore, the paper will give an analysis on the formation and content of YanWenLiang's art education ideas firstly, and then explore his historical contribution and inspiration on contemporary art education. The paper is divided into five parts:Part I: A brief introduction.Part II: YanWenLiang's life and the formation of his art education idea. Part III: An analysis on YanWenLiang's art education idea and practice.Part IV: historical contribution and time limitation of YanWenLiang's art education idea.Part V: reference and inspiration on the development of contemporary art education career, given by YanWenLiang's art education idea.
