The Study Of Strawsons' Particulars

It is very necessary and useful to do some study on particulars in metaphysics. Because the problem of Being is the core problem and essential question in Ontology, in other word , what is being? And it has different explanations to answer this question in the Philosophy's history. Generally it can be categorized as two exist, namely the existence of Particulars and the existence of Universals, that's to say, we can explain them into Particulars and Universals. And in Contemporary Western Philosophy, the metaphysics return to the modern philosophies'sights, through Quinn and Strawson's hardworking and exploring, and reassert the status in philosophy. Strawson establish the descriptive Metaphysics through studying on particulars and using descriptive ways. Studying the identification of particulars, discussing the spatio-temporal system , and establishing the basic particulars of material bodies and persons , Strawson at last construct the descriptive metaphysics . It is very important to recognize that in descriptive metaphysics the correlation of the spatio-temporal system and basic particulars make our Conceptual scheme .and the useful of particulars, as logical subjects, in sentence and propositions, and explore the problem of the existence in language analysis. The particulars, the universals, and the individuals, these categories have difference and relations in Strawson's philosophy. Strawson defined the individual as being able to appear as an individual, so this individual is in the broadest, logical sense of this word,in its generally routine using. Because through the discussing of subject and predicate, Strawson suppose universals can be both subjects and predicate, but particulars only can be subjects. However particulars hold a central position among logical subjects, because the particular is the paradigm of a logical subject. And when the universals can be as a logical subject, the universal has his own completences, as a individual. So individuals is the connection point between particulars and universals. But at last Strwason establishes the basic function of the particulars, especially the basic particulars.
